Grants recently approved by the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders are aimed at funding groups that provide services to domestic violence victims, the disabled, elderly and track sex offenders.
On Tuesday, freeholders unanimously passed $275,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations in Bergen County to help some of its “most vulnerable” citizens, according to a freeholder release.
“It is imperative that we continue our support for the great work that these organizations do in providing vital services for people with disabilities, and those who are victims of domestic violence,” said Freeholder Joan Voss in the release.
Agencies highlighted in the release include:
- Center for Hope and Safety, $47,225 to provide domestic violence counseling.
- The Arc of Bergen and Passaic Counties, $9,663 to assist with independent living for people with disabilities.
- Volunteer Center of Bergen County, $8,170 to support mentoring for children and families affected by abuse or neglect.
- Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, $8,700 and the Jewish Home of Rockleigh, $10,500 both to provide medical adult care and day care for older residents.
A separate grant of $11,818 came through the federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program will help fund work at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to comply with Megan’s Law, which requires police to maintain and share data about registered sex offenders in their communities.
“As a councilman in North Arlington, I worked with the Megan Kanka Foundation to secure funding to make background checks for recreation coaches a requirement…,” said Freeholder Chairman Steve Tanelli in the release. “I’m proud the the County continues to pursue grants that provide awareness and leadership about Megan’s Law for all of our communities in Bergen County.”
